Happy Halloween month with the appropriately color Happy Halloween month with the appropriately color-coordinated Hamilton Khaki Air Race 38mm Automatic, a collaboration with #redbull 🎃 I love the proportions of this piece, 38mm in diameter and under 46mm lug to lug. Essentially perfect if you ask me. It’s a pity that Hamilton hasn’t reused the case, that I know of, on any other piece. They did make a blue on silver version of the watch, which I also owned at a time but sold since, but eventually kept this one on the box. They do use the style and design on a few bigger pieces, ringing at 42mm diameters, but those are simply too big for my 6.25” wrists. It uses an in-house H10 movement, itself derived from the self-winding ETA Powermatic 80, which is splendidly accurate for a watch of this price range (normally about +2 sec/day), easily comparable to my COSC powered watches. I haven’t posted anything watch-related in a lon I haven’t posted anything watch-related in a long while, but fear not! It’s not due to a lack of interest in horological accoutrements but simply because I’ve been traveling and busy with work and life. Recently I acquired a new piece from Bulova, a brand with a long history in innovation. As many of you know, I’m a bit of a mechanical movement snob, but every once in a while a non-automatic watch catches my eye, for different reasons, such as Grand Seikos with their Spring Drive movements, Casios with their eternal cheap cool factor or Timex with their super affordable retro pieces. In this case it’s Bulova’s new Super Seville Date which harkens back to designs of the 70’s like the TV case shapes and their integrated bracelets, but with a couple of things I appreciate greatly: A cyclops to magnify the date and their Precisionist movement. For those interested, what separates this movement from other quartz hearts it’s the frequency at which it hums. Typically quartz movements operate at around 32 kHz, and have the annoying ticking seconds hand (ok, that’s a personal pet peeve), but the Precisionist operates at a staggering 262 kHz, which is 8 times higher than other quartz movements. This allows the watch to achieve an accuracy within 10 seconds PER YEAR, which is an enormous improvement over what most automatics can do, even very expensive ones, at around 2-10 seconds PER DAY. Another beautiful feature of this higher frequency is a continuous sweeping seconds hand, akin to Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive. On top of this, my piece has a beautiful blue dial, a butterfly bracelet clasp and a very near perfect case size of 37mm, with a lug to lug distance of just over 47mm which my small wrists like quite a lot. Add to that a price of between $550 and $650 depending on the model, and you have an incredible piece with a ton of retro feel and a super accurate heart. The only Tudor I own is the Classic Date Ref. 2101 The only Tudor I own is the Classic Date Ref. 21010-0002. It’s supposed to have a 38mm diameter case, but my reliable calipers tell me it’s just a hair over 37mm. Not that I mind, though, as it perfectly embodies the “classic” in its name. It’s remarkably slim, measuring at just under 10mm, with 20mm lugs and a lug-to-lug length of 41mm. These dimensions harken back to a more sensible era in terms of watch size, and they suit my small wrists (6.25 inches) exceptionally well. It’s quite light to boot. This watch is entirely crafted from steel, housing a Caliber 2824 with a 38hr reserve at its core and featuring a date window at 3 o’clock, a complication I particularly favor. The bracelet resembles the Jubilee, comprised of five links with a polished center and brushed edges. As for the clasp, is stamped steel with the Tudor logo and feels ancient, but it has grown on me over time. Watches and coffee once again, this time featuring Watches and coffee once again, this time featuring an incredibly affordable retro-looking piece from #timex, the Q GMT. With a style-appropriate case diameter of 38mm and remarkably short lugs, it both wears and exudes the essence of the 70s. Yes, it’s a quartz, but even that is apropos given that battery operated time pieces gained immense popularity during that era, thanks in part to Timex. Quartz isn’t typically my preference when it comes to what I wear or purchase, but strangely, I’m fine with it for this brand. Go figure. It goes to show that great design and remarkable value can sometimes win over my, admittedly, picky taste. Yes, the bracelet is cheap-feeling and it does not have any micro-adjustments, but what do you expect for the price? Besides, being a GMT and catering to travelers, its budget-friendly price tag becomes even more advantageous. I’m aware that there are arguably more luxurious I’m aware that there are arguably more luxurious brands, and certainly many more expensive ones, than Rolex. However, as someone who doesn’t own any of those other brands, Rolex still occupies a special place in my mind that no other brand can fill. This has been the case ever since I began lusting after it as a young teen. Once I bought my first one, a Yacht-Master, it almost (but not quite) put an end to my watch-collecting hobby. The craftsmanship, fit, finish, and overall quality are simply above anything else I have in my collection, and that makes it hard to get anything else. This is the clasp of my Explorer 214270 MK2, the sweet spot for sizing at 39mm. I’ve always been interested in “big date” complications and until I can get a #glashutteoriginal this new piece from Mido will do just fine! It’s their new Multifort TV Big Date. Chock full of 70’s charm and with a properly huge double set date window at 12 o’clock (which my eyes LOVE), it’s a modern sports model with a square case (TV, get it?) measuring just under 40mm and a lug to lug distance of a bit over 46mm. The lugs are short and curved down slightly so it sits nicely on my small 6.25” wrist. The integrated stainless steel bracelet is satin-brushed with polished center H-links and ends in a butterfly type folding clasp. Not my favorite due to the intrinsic lack of adjustability, but common in these types of watches. Big pet peeve so far? The links feature push pins… instead of the screws most common on pieces of this price range. Really Mido? That’s the best you could do? Annoying. At least the watch is powered by their ETA based Calibre 80, which should be pretty accurate and holds up to 80hr power reserve. Hence the name. I’ll write more impressions after a few days and take better photos. Although it doesn’t have a date, which I find very useful, purists be damned, the comfort and simplicity of the #214270 is just spot on. Oh and it’s my most accurate piece of them all. Finally got a free moment to take some photos of t Finally got a free moment to take some photos of the new #traska Venturer GMT and its details. As I said on my previous posting about it, a fantastic value for the price range. Incredible craftsmanship folks and an even better customer service (more on this below). The proportions are spot on, with a case diameter of 38.5mm and lug to lug distance of 46mm. I mean really, there’s no better proportions for a watch in the opinion of yours truly. The attention to detail in this piece is truly above and beyond of what I expected from a micro brand such as Traska. And I’m very happy I ordered one while they were available (wasn’t long, that!). Speaking of details, the watch comes in a beautiful leather pouch and check those two crowns: they both exhibit an embossed logo, the Traska brand logo on the main one and a “globe” motif on the one at 10 o’clock. That’s the one you use to change the inner 24hr bezel, which, together with the independently controlled jumping hour hand, allows one to easily change the time when traveling, without having to reset everything. This type of “true” GMT movement was previously only available on high end watches, so the introduction of a more affordable movement of this kind by #miyota is a game changer. The bracelet is very comfortable and has enough removable links and micro adjustments on the clasp to allow me a great fit, something that I struggle with given my smallish 6.25” wrist. And going back to the great customer service. When I received the watch, after a day or two I noticed a misaligned calendar disk. So I took a photo and sent it to Traska and Jon Mack, founder of the brand, responded immediately with a phone call. We chatted a bit about it and he proceeded to FedEx me a replacement piece with a prepaid package inside for me to ship the one I had. Two days later the new one was on my hands. I value that a lot and this type of personalized service, together with the fact that the watch is fabulous, has made me an instant fan of Traska. I’m looking forward to exploring more of their line.

I got a "techno" metal kit from Aliexpress and mod I got a "techno" metal kit from Aliexpress and modded my trusty Casio GWM5610. Super easy to swap (it took a lot longer to size it to my small wrists that anything else). Great look for a reasonable price (about $70). Very happy with the result! Quality is outstanding and I love all the engraved techie details. This version is stainless steel. They also sell a titanium version, which is much lighter, but costs twice as much. I actually don't mind the weight at all. Coffee and watches, Ep 08, this time with a workho Coffee and watches, Ep 08, this time with a workhorse of my collection: The Bulova Oceanographer, also known as the “Devil Diver” due to its 666 ft depth rating 😈. A beast of a watch, heavy on the wrist (in a good way) with incredible detailing for the price -check those applied indices, made with translucent material- and retro looks. Although perhaps “too” retro since it lacks a hacking mechanism. Bummer that, but a cool and affordable tank to have around and hey, the only green dial in my collection!
